Cytotoxicity Testing of 3D-Printed Biomedical Products

The cytotoxic effect of biomedical products made with three-dimensional manufacturing technology on human oral flora cells was examined. The work was carried out with the Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, Biruni University.

Product groups were studied comparatively so that differences in manufacturing method and raw material could be traced through to cell viability. In a comparative set-up every group is tested under the same culture conditions and within the same time frame; only then can a difference be attributed to the product itself.

Because layer structure and residual monomer content can vary from product to product in three-dimensional manufacturing, two products made for the same purpose may behave differently on cells. The resulting data contribute to the safety assessment carried out before clinical use.
