First Trials of Plant-Based Products in Cell Culture

Preliminary trials were run to establish how various plant-derived products behave in a cell culture environment. The work was carried out with the Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, İstinye University.

At this stage the fundamental parameters were determined: solubility, the choice of a suitable solvent, the workable concentration range and compatibility with the culture medium. Plant-derived products have complex compositions, and because it is not known in advance which concentration actually reaches the cells and remains stable in the medium, these parameters are worked out one by one before the experiment itself.

The purpose of a pilot study is not to produce results but to make sure the real experiment is designed correctly. The preliminary findings set the concentration range and the experimental set-up for the later cytotoxicity and mechanism-of-action work.
